This week’s roundup highlights some exciting AI-driven breakthroughs—from enhancing breast cancer screening and advancing cancer research to transforming the entertainment industry. As these advancements unfold, staying informed can be a challenge. Here’s your weekly rundown on the latest AI innovations and news you might have missed.

AI Revolutionises Breast Cancer Screening
AI is transforming breast cancer screening, catching what human eyes sometimes miss. University Hospitals Sussex (UHSussex) recently participated in a national project using AI to analyse mammograms. Over a two-month period, more than 12,000 mammograms that were considered "normal" were reviewed using AI. As a result, 11 women were called back for further tests, with five ultimately diagnosed with breast cancer.

Dr Olga Strukowska, consultant radiologist and director of the West Sussex breast screening program, described the AI screening as "exciting," emphasising that it "increases accuracy while reducing missed cancers and lowering false positives."

Virtual Clinical Trials: AI's Role in Advancing Cancer Research
Researchers aiming to advance cancer treatment through AI-simulated clinical trials have received £5.9 million in funding from Cancer Research UK. The grant will support a project led by the University of Manchester and The Christie Cancer Hospital to test the effectiveness of radiotherapy treatments on a group of "virtual" patients, based on real-life data.

Lead research Professor Rob Bristow said the simulated trials would help make research “faster, safe, and less expensive” than traditional large-scale clinical studies.

AI Brings New Hope for Treating Children’s Brain Tumours
Researchers at the Cancer Research UK Children’s Brain Tumour Centre of Excellence in Cambridge are investigating how AI could help identify new treatments for children with brain tumours. Co-director Prof Richard Gilbertson emphasized the need for new, less toxic drugs for young patients. With a multi-million pound grant, part of the funding will go toward using AI to create digital models of the most complex brain tumours, enabling virtual clinical trials. Read the full article

Google's Ambitious AI Assistant Project: Project Jarvis
Google briefly introduced its vision for a “universal AI agent” aimed to assist users with daily tasks. Recent insights have shed more light on its initiative, known internally as Project Jarvis. Unlike traditional voice assistants, Jarvis is designed to perform tasks autonomously, navigate the web, and make independent decisions. Designed to transform how users interact with their devices, Jarvis acts as an AI partner, actively managing tasks in real time rather than passively awaiting commands.

Generative AI Transforms Tom Hanks and Robin Wright Across 60 Years
TriStar Pictures released Here, a $50 million film directed by Robert Zemeckis, using real-time generative AI to transform Tom Hanks and Robin Wright’s faces across a 60-year span. This marks one of Hollywood’s first full-length features built around AI-powered visual effects.

Rather than casting different actors for various ages, AI altered Hanks’ and Wright’s appearances. Metaphysic trained custom machine-learning models on frames from their previous films. The resulting models can generate instant face transformations, cutting out the long manual post-production process of traditional CGI.

Amazon’s X-Ray Recaps: AI Summaries for TV Shows
Amazon announced the launch of "X-Ray Recaps," a generative AI-powered feature that provides concise summaries of entire seasons, single episodes, or parts of episodes. The company claims that guardrails are in place to prevent spoilers, so viewers can enjoy their favourite shows without worry. The feature uses a combination of custom AI models to analyze video, subtitles, and dialogue, to describe key events, conversations, and other information.

AI Helps The Beatles Earn Two Grammy Nominations
The Beatles have earned two Grammy nominations this year, despite the band having been broken up for 50 years. Paul McCartney used AI last year to create "the last Beatles record" by taking a 1978 demo from John Lennon and enhancing its poor sound quality. The resulting song, "Now and Then," which was refined with the help of AI, is nominated for Record of the Year and Best Rock Performance.
