AI's rapid advancements are reshaping education, presenting transformative opportunities while challenging us to navigate trust and ensure its profound impact is equitable and enduring. While the innovation hype cycle and ongoing debate around AGI’s timeline may captivate us, one truth is indisputable: AI is here to stay, and its impact will be profound.

My fascination with AI began in 2015 when I first recognised how, with just a few pivotal steps, this technology could redefine society. As an avid reader and observer of AI’s evolution, I’ve explored literature, listened to experts, and grappled with the philosophical and ethical debates surrounding AI. Recently, however, I’ve moved beyond theory - actively testing assumptions and building practical applications through my business, Cerebral Circuit.

A career in higher education naturally drew me to the sector’s potential for AI transformation. I began questioning whether the current educational ecosystem can withstand this onslaught - or more crucially, how institutions might adapt in response to such a powerful, evolving technology. It’s a race to see who will lead this charge and deliver real value to students, faculty, and society.

Today, the AI surge is highly concentrated, fuelled by massive investments and immense power demands. Yet it’s entirely conceivable - and perhaps inevitable - that generative AI, if left unregulated, will become democratised and universally accessible in the coming years. Unlike any technology before, AI introduces an "alien" element to education - a distinct, creative force that fundamentally challenges our understanding of learning itself.

Generative AI: Immediate Impacts on Higher Education

When OpenAI introduced ChatGPT in November 2022, it ignited a fierce initial resistance across many higher education institutions. Concerns over cheating and academic integrity led some schools and districts to ban the technology outright. However, this stance has gradually softened as institutions begin to see AI’s potential beyond threats to academic honesty. Some have moved beyond caution by establishing working groups and committees, with more progressive institutions moving to experimentation, assessing generative AI’s utility in education with pilot programs and strategic initiatives.

Before examining AI’s role in the near term, it’s essential to recognise higher education’s core purposes: to advance knowledge, expand human intellect, and drive social and economic impact. For students - the primary stakeholders - education is both an investment and a unique social contract. It represents an award (a certificate) that signals competence and promises economic security. The question then becomes: how can AI honour this social contract, supporting integrity and trust while enriching the educational experience?

Near-term applications of generative AI in higher education are likely to be incremental but impactful, enhancing efficiency and refining the student experience. My experience focuses on three primary stakeholder groups: mature age students, learning and development, and edtech providers.

Mature age students

AI is already reshaping student behaviour. Mature, working-age students use platforms like GPT and Gemini not to cheat but to deepen and support their learning, particularly in navigating complex concepts and structuring projects. Yet poorly designed assessments often push time-poor students toward shortcuts. Rather than “solving for cheating,” institutions should rethink assessment design to encourage creativity, collaboration, and real-world applicability. AI-powered learning analytics can play a key role here, offering real-time insights into student performance, identifying where students struggle, and enabling targeted support to prevent disengagement. AI also offers new avenues in student success through personalised learning pathways that provide timely encouragement, adapt to individual learning styles, and enhance student engagement.

Learning and development

Generative AI is unlocking possibilities in instructional design, particularly in tools like Khanmigo, which builds on decades of research in learning science. Personalisation and contextual understanding are emerging strengths of AI, allowing instructional content to adapt based on each learner’s pace, context, and preferences. AI can track learning milestones, serving up curated extra curricula resources like articles, podcasts, or videos to help students achieve mastery. Looking ahead, together with supporting wearable technology, AI could dynamically adapt content presentation in real time to match students’ moods, energy levels, and engagement patterns, creating an even more immersive, hyper-personalised, learning and assessment experience.

Edtech and institutional impact

In the broader edtech landscape, private companies are rapidly adopting AI for content creation, course design, enrolment support, and marketing automation. AI-enabled platforms streamline operations and support profitability, from generating lesson plans to fully developing virtual learning experiences. Despite these advances, a gap remains in higher education’s active exploration of AI's full potential. Although many institutions may see their current models as resilient enough to withstand this shift, it is my contention that active engagement with AI is essential for their continued relevance.

The question now is not whether AI will shape education but how institutions will approach this transformation responsibly. With learning analytics, personalisation, and automation poised to redefine educational practices, the need to foster trust is paramount. Institutions must actively integrate AI with a focus on ethical practices, transparency, and a commitment to enhancing student success. As AI reshapes higher education’s landscape, the challenge and opportunity lie in aligning these powerful tools with the values and mission that define the academic experience. Thoughtfully embracing AI, educational institutions can drive a new era of accessible, meaningful, and equitable learning for all.

Redefining Educational Institutions in the Age of AI

The evolution of educational institutions in the age of AI will be gradual at first, then sudden. These changes won’t occur evenly. While elite institutions like Harvard and Oxford may initially resist certain aspects of AI integration, smaller colleges in under-resourced areas may embrace change more rapidly. But the transformation is inevitable.

At the heart of this change is a shifting state of trust. Our institutions and individual experts are facing heightened scepticism, influenced by social media, the rise of influencers, and shifting societal dynamics. AI, if inadequately regulated, could exacerbate this, spreading vast amounts of misinformation and disinformation. Without protections similar to Section 230 for social media companies, algorithms could easily sow chaos. Young people, in particular, are learning to trust - or are being unwittingly programmed to trust - algorithmic sources over traditional human expertise, pushing us into uncharted territory.

Yet, it’s not just young people who may turn to AI as the trusted source of information. I find myself relying more on LLM’s, than on the average person for answers to complex questions. Yes, AI may hallucinate or display biases, but humans also err or deceive. AI is a game changer; it’s easy to imagine a near future where it becomes the go-to source for accurate, immediate answers, even surpassing human knowledge in many domains. Moreover, AI’s pattern recognition abilities powered by all the world’s literature may allow it to answer questions we haven’t even thought to ask, unlocking new fields of insight.

Currently, experts in deep, specialised fields (mostly) retain public trust, but this may wane as people increasingly turn to AI for quick, convenient answers. The younger generation, in particular, may come to rely on generative AI, not out of convenience alone but because of its growing reliability and accuracy. We may see what some call the “dopa generation,” more inclined toward the convenience of AI-driven solutions. As these models improve, they may not only inform but also influence thought and decision-making, potentially at the behest of powerful commercial interests or even rogue AI self-interests.

One outcome of this shift that I predict is that AI will know our children’s capabilities, interests, and learning needs with precision. In the future, wearable devices could combine biometric data with AI-driven insights, guiding young people toward careers that align with their talents and preferences. AI could serve as an educational partner, grooming, educating, and adapting its guidance as students upskill and adjust to a rapidly changing world. The dystopian possibilities here are plentiful and daunting, but for now, let’s focus on the potential for positive transformation.

Institutions are likely to remain relevant in the medium term due to the trust that still exists in the current system. However, their roles will evolve significantly, driven by shifts in information access and the demands of a new workforce. Here’s how educational institutions might adapt:

Focus on the 3 Cs: creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration

With information ubiquitous, many advocate for institutions to emphasise essential human skills, often summed up as the “3 Cs.” Creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration, along with storytelling and other enterprise skills - championed by thinkers like Professor Scott Galloway - are likely to be central to a robust, modern liberal arts education. Institutions that adopt AI thoughtfully are poised to deliver better outcomes for students and produce higher-level research, potentially even increasing profitability in the process.

Toward a future of machine-led teaching and assessment

In the longer term, we may find that AI can teach and assess with greater accuracy than traditional human methods. Algorithms could become adept at assessing competencies in ways that surpass the “signal” value of a degree, reshaping education into a competency-based system that aspires to meritocracy. While this could create a more equitable society, some predict a darker possibility - a world bifurcated between the ultra-elite and those unable to access or afford the benefits of AI in wealth creation, bioengineering, and beyond.

Experimentation as a path to institutional relevance

Now is the time for institutions to experiment with AI thoughtfully, remaining true to their mission of truth, open discourse, and knowledge sharing and generation. Universities must not only encourage discourse around the ethical and social implications of AI but also ensure that altruistic voices are heard, counterbalancing the profit-driven narratives of tech giants. For education to thrive, institutions must shift the focus from assessments as a transactional measure to an experience where students are driven by the excitement of learning, curiosity, and peer engagement - making assessment a byproduct of genuine intellectual pursuit.

In an AI-driven world, educational institutions have a unique opportunity to redefine their roles and reinforce their relevance by focusing on the process of learning rather than solely on outcomes. By thoughtfully embracing AI, institutions can create environments where students are not merely working toward assessments but are fully engaged in discovery, intellectual curiosity, and personal growth. With ethical integration of AI, institutions can guide students toward a meaningful, purpose-driven education that prioritises exploration over evaluation.

Navigating the Risks of AI in Education

The accelerating pace of change and increasing demands on our time mean that we have less space for reflection. We’re becoming over-optimised, moving from one device to the next in a relentless search for dopamine, escapism, or both. What will be the long-term impact if our earbuds, smart glasses, and devices continuously feed information, leaving only our sleep for the brain to process the day’s events?

While I’m optimistic about AI’s potential to democratise education and advance knowledge transfer, I worry about a society bifurcating into an elite class of augmented superhumans and a “well-educated” yet disempowered majority. In this dystopian future, who is making decisions about the ethical and bias-laden foundations of AI? Who is holding themselves accountable for the damage these technologies could inflict on humanity?

Meaningful regulation will need to be global. But in today’s fractured geopolitical climate, can we realistically expect a global consensus? Without it, bad actors could use AI as a tool for sophisticated propaganda, destabilising the world as we know it and creating a reality unrecognisable to most.

And consider privacy. How far-fetched is it that facial recognition could evolve into facial feature detection, combined with biometric data and millions of machine simulations that could predict our next actions - or worse, our thoughts? What would privacy mean in a world where algorithms can anticipate our every move?

In a world increasingly shaped by AI, we stand at a critical juncture. The choices we make today - whether around ethics, regulation, or the role of technology in our lives - will have profound implications for the future of society. As we push forward with incredible technological advancements, we must remember to prioritise reflection, responsibility, and the preservation of human values. For all the promise AI holds, the real question is whether we can harness it thoughtfully, creating a future that serves not just a select few but all of humanity.

Generative AI’s Transformative Promise for education

Education has long been the pathway to a better life, yet quality education remains out of reach for many. Generative AI and automation could bring this within reach for everyone, on a truly global scale. Unlike the internet, which provided access to vast amounts of knowledge, AI has the potential to deliver personalised, high-quality learning experiences. Where MOOCs and video instruction expanded educational access, AI agents can now teach, interact with, and deeply embed learning in ways previously unimaginable.

A surge in creativity and knowledge

Generative AI has the potential to unlock new levels of creativity, continuously broadening horizons and provoking innovative ideas. Properly aligned and ethically designed, these AI tools could empower people to tackle global challenges confidently and collaboratively. AI’s potential goes beyond education; it could fundamentally expand what we believe is possible, fostering a society of knowledgeable, capable individuals ready to meet global challenges.

Revolutionising assessment and skills recognition

One of my primary interests lies in assessment, particularly the integration of conversational AI with biometric analysis. We are on the brink of AI-driven grading and skills evaluation that could achieve unrivaled accuracy. In the future, AI could potentially assess a person’s competencies with greater reliability than traditional human evaluators, using data from conversations, written expressions, and even eye engagement metrics, heart rate and other biometric data. Imagine an AI-driven ranking of skills that could, in real time, correlate skill levels to market demand and compensation scales and eradicate the signal value of a traditional college degree. With systems like Degreed advocating for a skills-based economy, AI may soon make that vision a reality, allowing us to recognise and reward all skills however acquired, transparently and equitably.

The disruption of teaching: a paradigm shift

While both teaching and research will inevitably be transformed, teaching is poised to experience the most immediate change. I envision a future where AI supports students consistently, free of the human limitations of bias, fatigue, and uneven teaching quality. Human interactions in teaching will become more deliberate and selective, augmenting AI's constant presence and support. An AI that is well-designed and attuned to student needs can provide tailored guidance regardless of demographic factors, ultimately creating a more equitable and enjoyable educational experience.

A meritocratic future of equal opportunity

In a future defined by AI-driven education and job matching, we may finally see a world where skills and human characteristics - not things like race, gender, social class, or alma mater - determine opportunity. A meritocratic society, with AI facilitating equal opportunity based solely on competency, could become a reality.

Leading the charge: thoughtful AI-first educational systems

Exciting developments are underway with thought leaders like Paul LeBlanc and George Siemens, who are pioneering “AI-first” university practices through projects like Human Systems. Such initiatives aim to thoughtfully integrate generative AI into educational institutions, helping shape a future where AI-driven universities prioritise inclusivity, equity, and impactful learning experiences.

Generative AI stands ready to transform education by making high-quality learning accessible to all, fostering a culture of creativity, and redefining assessment and competency in ways that promote true meritocracy. As we move forward, AI-first educational models that prioritise inclusivity, equity, and lifelong learning will be key to realising this vision.

Academic institutions, once staunchly protective of conventional methodologies, are beginning to explore AI’s potential, driven by a recognition of AI's unique strengths in personalisation, efficiency, and support.
